The location of Mid Thatch on Chapel Road in Sea Palling means that the dog friendly beach is a very short and easy walk away, either down the Beach Road or across the field at the back and onto the dunes further north of the main access ramp. For a small village, Sea Palling has a lot to offer with a dog friendly pub, shop/post office, dog friendly cafe open 364 days a year, a small amusement arcade and fish and chip cafe and fresh fish stall too. Sea Palling regularly has Blue Flag status granted to it by the Keep Britain Tidy campaign. Quite an achievement for such a small place. Read about it here.
When you arrive:
Parking for two cars off road. Access into the large, fenced yard via blue painted wooden gate. The yard is a paved and shingled sun trap, fully fenced all round to over 4ft. Outside tap, log store and garden furniture.
Step into the living room through the blue painted timber stable door (lovely to open the top half to let the sun in). Solid floor with underfloor heating and sheepskin rugs – wonderful for dogs and humans alike – and a huge feature inglenook fireplace with wood burning stove and original brickwork exposed – a wonderful feature for the room. There is a large coffee table now in front of the fire and the sofas. At the other end of the room is an exposed brick feature wall and you can relax on the Sofa Workshop sofa and chairs. There is also a tv, dvd player, dining table and chairs and the room also is enhanced by exposed ceiling beams and large window out onto the front yard.
Through to the….
Small but newly fitted with electric oven and hob with extractor, fridge, washing machine plus a microwave, toaster and slow cooker. Exposed beams and radiator, tiled floor and lovely window view across fields towards the dunes in the distance.
Double glazed windows, again with a view across the open fields. Oil fired boiler here with useful room for dog bowls and food and other bits and pieces. This leads into the …
Double glazed windows with more of those open farmland views! Modern bathroom suite with shower, sink and toilet plus an illuminated mirror and heated towel rail. Small but perfectly formed!
Back into the Living Room to the feature custom made oak wooden stairs….narrow and rather steep but solid and plenty to hold onto. The stairs go straight into:
Bedroom 1 (3.6m x 2.6m)
Wooden framed double bed with pocket sprung mattress, cotton bed linen and throws. Window overlooking, yes you’ve guessed it, more farmland (but looking inland this time) Not a large room but well thought out with a built in cupboard, antique Orkney bedroom chair and exposed beams.
This bedroom leads straight into:.
Bedroom 2 (3.6m x 2.6m)
Wooden framed double bed with pocket sprung mattress, cotton bed linen and throws. Another lovely farmland view through the double glazed window. Chest of drawers and antique Orkney bedroom chair. More exposed beams too.
Mid Thatch is a non smoking property and barbecues and other naked flames are not permitted. This is an important insurance requirement.
This is an old, character cottage. The stairs are steep but well supported with handrails and can clearly be seen in the gallery photos.
Originally two up, two down layout, the downstairs has been extended but the bedrooms lead into each, there is no corridor/hallway.
There is not a cupboard suitable for a full size hoover but a hand held hoover and floor brush are provided.
If you would like your dogs to share your bed please do bring your own bed linen – thank you.

“We’ve had a lovely week in your gorgeous cottage – very relaxing with plenty of walks from the door, in fact the dogs probably need a rest now! Would love to return.”
“We have really enjoyed ourselves this week, the cottage was perfect for us and our three dogs. The area is a paradise for dogs, a lovely walk over the fields to what must be one of the nicest beaches in the country.

How To Find Us:
How to find us: 2 The Hollies, Chapel Road Sea Palling NR12 0UQ.
Or – From A149 at Stalham, take the turning onto “Old Market Road” signposted towards Ingham, Lessingham and Sea Palling and follow the signs to Sea Palling. Turn left onto Beach Road in the centre of the village. Almost immediately take the next left, Chapel Road. It’s a narrow, winding road so care will be needed. A short distance down here you will come across a row of thatched cottages and Mid Thatch is, oddly enough, the middle one!

A much needed break, all be it a short one. Have enjoyed our stay in this lovely cottage and its the first time in 4 years that we’ve had a few days to ourselves! Our 2 furry friends were nice and cosy, both enjoyed the beaches at Sea Palling, Cart Gap and Happisburgh . Everyone has been friendly, despite being the summer holidays and busy! Thank you so much and hope to return to Mid-Thatch!!
Julie and Tom – August 2017
We enjoyed staying in the cottage, the bed was very comfortable and the enclosed garden was good for the dogs. Thank you for the excellent Broadband. We had lovely walks with the dogs and they thoroughly enjoyed the beach. For many years we stayed at the Sea Breeze campsite and are familiar with the area. We have taken the dogs to the Reef many times. We would recommend the butchers in Stalham, they do lovely hot meat baguettes. We love visiting Happisburgh – the lighthouse is open on Sundays! The small sticks cafe provides very good food. Also poppyland is an amazing find!! WW2 memorial, music and a patient passionate owner. Great food, we could have stayed there all day!! the weather has been fine, warm but also a bit windy. Thank you so much and we will definitely return soon!
Mary and Andy - August 2017
Lovely little cottage, comfy beds, and beautiful welcome pack for humans and dogs. Loved exploring the beach and local walks with our dog, everywhere we walked everyone was very friendly! Really enjoyed the cafe in Sea Palling, really recommend the thick shakes after a long walk. We had a very wet day on Wednesdsay so went to Norwich – recommend the park and ride in Sprowston. Lovely city to do some shopping! We had a lovely relaxing holiday so thank you!
Karen, Pat and George – August 2017
Beautiful cottage with everything we needed and more! The three great danes felt right at home within an hour. We have had a great time exploring the fabulous beaches and coastal paths, as well as experiencing some of the local pubs and hospitality there. The weather has been lovely and the front garden is a great place to trap the sun! Will definitely be back very soon (a week is not long enough!!) Thank you
Terry and Lynn – August 2017
We have enjoyed a really wonderful week here at Mid-Thatch. We could not fault the cottage; it was great and we found it fantastic to be able to walk to the beach through the field without having to go on the road much at all! Cottage was clean, showers were great and the bedding was fantastic. Thank you
Lily and Penny - July 2017
Had a really lovely holiday!! the cottage was lovely and the beds were really comfy. The welcome hamper was a very lovely touch and muchly appreciated . The dogs loved the beach and being able to walk down was brilliant! Definitely recommend the Nelson Head pub in Horsey, can walk or drive there!
Paul and Julie – June 2017
hat a lovely holiday cottage! Lovely beds and all mod cons along wiht a lovely view. Thank you for the hamper - lovely food and doggies loved the biscuits. They also loved the beach and the coastal path walks - as did we. Everywhere is so dog friendly - we had a coffee in the bar on Cromer Pier - dogs allowed! And we had a yummy brunch in the cafe up the road (attached to the amusements) and the dogs came too. The Reef Bar also lets dog in but we only had a pint in there. We walked along to the Cart Gap road cafe (near the RNLI shop on the way to Happisburgh) but it was shut!! (Closes Tuesday and Wednesday). We walked oto Wroxham Barn along the Coastal Path. Lathams at Potter Heigham is great for a browse and has a cafe but we didn't try it. We love Norfolk and hope to be back soon! Thank you for a lovely cottage.
Jill, Alison, Paddy, Dotty & Missy - May 2017
Cosy cottage, comfy beds and sofa. Lots of dog walks. Great walk at Bacton Woods, Forestry Commission, also at Horsey Mill and on The Coast Path. Felbrigg Hall ground are full of walks for the dogs. I bought a big bowl in the lovely second hand shop in Stalham "Emily Faith" and have left it here for others to use. Lovely sunny day Wednesday - the garden is a sun trap. Went to RNLI shop in Cart Gap - saw the new lifeboat arrive. Went to Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden - absolutely lovely 25,000 Primulas, lovely Candelabra ones. Cafe with plenty of outside space. Dogs welcome! Cromer is lovely. On the clifftop, big field to walk dogs there, great little cafe next to car park
Mary, Lee, Petal & Buster - May 2017
One of the best cottages we have stopped in, and we have stopped in many all the way to Saint Ives! Everything was perfect and thought out for guests. The welcome package for humans and dog was a lovely touch. Julie (me) has enjoyed cooking local seafood - love it! The walks to the beach in Sea Palling from the cottage so very relaxing. We loved the beach and cafe at Winterton, local pubs very dog friendly. Cannot praise the cottage too highly, hope to come back sometime next year or maybe a little later to enjoy the grab and lobster festival in Cromer.
Julie & Tony Lynch & Greyce (Shitzu pup) - May 2017
It has all been said! Beautiful well stocked and furnished cottage. We will not need to bring half the stuff we did next time! Lovely location, lovely area. Great to have a convenient footpath beside the cottage to the dunes and the track this die of the dunes comes out at the reef bar (no dogs on blue flag beach to the left but walk for miles on the right). Had a scare when Izzie the Spaniel was being teased by a seal. She kept swimming out, it would disappear, appearing a few yards away and it took a while to get Izzie back under control. Everywhere seems dog friendly. Best meal at The Greyhound, Hickling. Dogs allowed in bar and garden where food is served. Had to leave enough room for black cherry with brandy and meringue mess. So just had starters. A special thanks to emma for letting us back in - we must check who has got the door key BEFORE we close the door!
Roy & Chris and Sky, Izzie & Luna - May 2017
Cottage is very cosy, heats up quickly although we haven't really needed it as we had lovely sunny weather. Beds are super comfy! Great base to visit neighbouring villages and of course a short walk either at the front or the back to the lovely blue flag beach. We spent a lovely afternoon hiring a boat on the broads at Sutton Staithe boat yard - lovely guys and very reasonable - only a 10 minute drive away. Love Sea Palling!
Sarah, Ian, Neeve & Erin and Anyah the Husky - April 2017
Lovely warm cottage. Beds comfy and clean, bathroom spotless and kitchen with everything you need to cook a meal. Thanks for the basket of treats. Garden really safe and secure, great walk to beach via footpath. Sea Palling beach worthy of it's blue flag. Great base to explore, will return.
Lynda, Leah & Frank - April 2017
Perfect second visit to Mid Thatch. Weather was kind and the cottage warm and homely. Won't be long until we come back.
Rod, Julie, Indy, Max, Ruby and Scruff - April 2017
This is our second visit to Mid Thatch, this cosy cottage. Weather was lovely all week. Cocoa enjoyed sunning herself in the garden; it's a real sun trap. We had a trip out to Holkham - worth the drive - and a stop off at Wells for fish and chips and a bit of a stroll around the shops. The welcome hamper is always an added bonus thank you.
Pauline, Laurie and Cocoa - March 2017
A lovely short break exploring Norfolk - we will definitely have to come back to continue. Did the lovely Sea Palling/Hempstead Heath walk the first day and then a great visit/walk to Sheringham Park the 2nd day. It was lovely being right by the beach and the cottage was very cosy and nice to come home to! Both us and all 3 dogs enjoyed the underfloor heating! Thanks for the hamper - much appreciated!
Laura and Sandra with Molly, Una and Neville - March 2017
We have had a lovely holiday here at Mid Thatch. This is our 2nd stay in Sea Palling just in this cotage. Bonnie has loved daily walks on the beach often we have been the only ones there. We love Truly Local at Stalham for local gifts/produce. The local shop here is well stocked, lovely walks at the National Trust properties at Sheringham & Felbrigg. We walked along the beach to Cart Gap (1hr) and ate at a small cafe being able to sit outside in January! Very dog friendly pub at Happisburgh - this house with locally brewed beer and log fire! Lots of seals at Horsey - still one or two pups around. Cottage has been very warm and comfortable - thank you.
David, Deborah & Bonnie - February 2017
We have had a lovely time at Mid Thatch and Sea Palling. Liked that we could walk all four dogs lead free to the beach for miles and miles of running and swimming! We had everything we needed. The hamper (including tea and milk) is a lovely touch - fab butchers (Causeway) and farm shop (Cooks) nearby. Well worth a visit if eating in. Thank you Mid Thatch. Looking forward to returning soon.
Hannah, Iain and Faye with Bella, Barney, Charlie and Max - February 2017
What a wonderful find, truely welcoming. Perfect walk to a beautiful beach. The cottage had everything we needed; the welcome pack was a lovely touch and the dog treats were appreciated. The weather was dry and very sunny which was good for the break. We felt the cottage was truely 'dog friendly' and all the little 'doggie' touches (throws, bowls, toys etc.) made us all feel very much at home. Will recommend to any dog owners. We will definitely come again.
Maura, Martin & Millie (The Spanish Water Dog) - December 2016
We have had a beautiful and peaceful weekend at the cottage. We really appreciated being so well catered for and the cosy, warm and dog friendly environment! Being such a short walk to the beach was an added bonus! Make the most of it while you're here. Thanks again.
Patrick and Amy - December 2016
We have had a lovely week at Mid Thatch escaping the lead up to Christmas. Lack of mobile phone reception was perfect. Indy our English Pointer didn't want to leave and had to be carried out to the car. She's got the hang of morning beach runs and meeting lots of doggie friends in the dunes. Thank you.
Niel, Midgi and Indy - December 2016
First visit to Mid Thatch but definitely not the last. We walked to Happisburgh, took 5 1/2 hours, not because it's a long way - we met so many friendly chatty people the beach who all love dogs. We can highly recommend the Broadlands fish & chips takeaway and the Hong Kong Thai takeaway. Lots of seals at Horsey and Winterton beach is wonderful. Being able to walk from the cottage to the beach - even when its a bit muddy is great - no need for the car. We came equipt with flashing dog collar so were able to stay on the beach until 17.50 - helped by the moon. A lovely warm, cozy cottage. Many thanks.
Sue, Paul & Flo (2 year old Irish Staffie) - November 2016
This was the second visit to this cottage which shows we love it. It is a short walk to a fabulous beach where the dogs could just run. It was amazing weather for October so we went to Horsey Beach and there were so many seals on the beach (and some baby ones). The dogs loved it as there were toys and even some treats! We hope to come again soon.

Our first visit to Sea Palling, Mid Thatch, nice homely cottage home from home. The welcome pack was a lovely touch and our dog Cocoa enjoyed the biscuits. We had fish and chips from Stalham and you get loads, would recommend The Nelsons Head at Horsey for Sunday lunch and we had numerous trips to a cafe at Winterton-on-sea called The Dunes Cafe, they even provide little sheds for you to sit in with your doggies when it's raining outside. The cafe does lovely Norfolk shortbread and bread pudding. We had breakfast at Mundesley in The Corner Cafe well worth a visit. We saw seals on the beah at Horsey, had numerous walks to the beach which is near enough on the door step. The cottage has everything you need and we enjoyed our stay at Mid Thatch. Would recommend to friends and family, thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mid Thatch, hope to see you next year.

We have had a fabulous week in a beautiful cottage. So much was provided for Charlie (bowls, treats, toys etc) I feel I could have just brought him and his lead. We have enjoyed the beach, bar and chippy here at Sea Palling, as well as visiting Wells-Next-The-Sea, Cromer, Horsey (beautiful beach and pub) and Great Yarmouth. Bure Valley Railway and cruise on the river at Wroxham were realy dog friendly and made for a lovely day out! Enjoyed cooking in the spacious kitchen and a cheeky takeaway from the Indian Cinnamon too. A wonderful relaxing time had by all three of us.
Laura, Jason and Charlie the Sprocker - August 2016

We have really enjoyed our stay at Mid Thatch and the welcome basket and biscuits for the dogs was a nice surprise when we arrived. Our 2 dogs have enjoyed lots of walks on the beach and we've seen seals and terns nesting on the RSPB reserve as you walk towards Happisburgh (dogs on leads here). Sea Palling is really dog friendly - even a bowl of water outside the Amusements/Cafe. The burgers from the cafe were lovely and good value. We are hoping to return next year
Ryan, Sue and Rafa and Benni - July 2016
Our first visit to Mid Thatch and our second visit to Sea Palling. A lovely cottage - very homely. The dogs loved the underfloor heating after spending hours in the sea. We have 5 dogs with us and they have had a ball of a time. They have loved the dunes at Horsey. When the sun was out Sea Palling gets a bit full, so we took the dogs to Horsey - much quieter. Love the cottage for a short break and the basket of goodies that was waiting for us was very welcome. Total destress time. Love Sea Palling - we are back in August. Thanks Mid Thatch!
Irene and Geoff, Bailey, Dom, Socks, Tilda and Little Titch - July 2016
What a beautiful homely cottage. After a 4 hour drive from London, we were grateful for the basket of goodies which were supplied for us and our 2 dogs loved the biscuits. The weather was lovely and twice a day walks along the beach with the dogs was perfect. The whole area and surroundings are so dog friendly, you relax as soon as you arrive. We are now looking to retire to Norfolk and have seen some very lovely cottages - we cannot wait. Thank you Sue, I think you have thought of everything to make a holiday so much more relaxed.
Dani, Nigel, Dottie and Riley - June 2016
What a lovely, welcoming cottage at Mid Thatch. The underfloor heating was a joy to come home to as the weather was a little unseasonably cold. As a result of the weather, we managed a full packed itinerary with lots to see and do. A particular highlight for me was to come across a seal on Horsey beach who was exhausted after battling the strong waves in the sea. Percie loved Winterton-On-Sea, beautiful unspoilt beaches and again the wind has its advantages as she loved chasing the surf and the foam bubbles as they blew across Sea Palling beach. Had a thoroughly enjoyable time in your little cottage.
Paula and Cathy, Tooti and Percie
After 4 hours travelling from London, we arrived, looking for somewhere that would take away the stresses and strains of everyday life!! We found that here at Mid Thatch. If it rained, we stayed in, enjoying a warm house where we could really feel comfortable and relaxed. With the fire gently crackling, it felt like our home, our our place. That is remarkable. We hope to visit again soon, when it is warm enough to swim.
Sam and Tiffany - May 2016
We have had a lovely week here. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't too kind. However we have had lots of lovely walks along the coast. Visited some lovely parks with the National Trust and some sandy runs on the beach with the doggies. Would recommend to friends. Hope this is a success for you.
Charlotte and Andrew with Abbie - May 2016
We've had a lovely week in your gorgeous cottage - very relaxing with penty of walks from the door, in fact the dogs probably need a rest now! Emma (next door) and her sister, were extremely helpful. We were very luck with the weather , so also made full use of sitting in the garden with a drink. Would recommend Reefs Bar for a good value Sunday lunch and as always, the Nelsons Head at Horsey for good food and drinks.

We have had a fabulous time here at Mid Thatch, if only for a short break. We took the dogs to Waxham beach before we arrived, then to the Bacton Woods for a Sunday morning stroll before going to The Star at Lessingham for a superb lunch - welcoming as always. Great walks from the front door as well and it's garden was a real sun trap. Thanks for the welcome pack - the popcorn was appreciated by the humans and treats by the dogs. Will have come again! We have had a lovely week in Mid Tatch, the dogs love their treats and the beach, they were so excited that they were allowed such freedom!! The cottage had everything you need for a holiday by the sea. Lovely people and the shop was well sourced and we loved the peace and quiet while having access to the beach. The hamper was a lovely surprise and had apple juice made by some relatives of ours maybe 'Cox's Apple Juice'!! Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable.
