The Old Piggery is a single storey conversion of an old farm building, finished to a high standard, using many reclaimed materials and is furnished and decorated in a simple, rural style – much loved by many regulars and their dogs.
It is next door but two to the famous East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens and a short drive to many sandy, dog friendly beaches as well as having a maze of easy walks from the door. The barn next door has now been converted to holiday accommodation – Running Hare Barn.
When you get here: From Mill Lane you turn up a very short track beside the Piggery, (having passed the wind turbine on your right) and park on the concrete parking pad at the back (enough room for 4 cars). A short path leads across the grass, down a couple of steps and into the fully glazed double back door leading you into the …
Kitchen area: Open plan with high beamed ceiling. Fully fitted and well equipped for your self catering holiday. Includes an electrc oven and hob, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, washing machine and microwave/combination oven. Pine dining table and chairs. The large breakfast bar/work area has 4 pine stools to sit at. From here you can watch the cook or the tv or stare into the fire or the cook’s eyes! On the other side of the breakfast bar is the …..
Sitting area: Comfy leather sofas and leather armchairs with a large flat screen TV/DVD (Freeview) and home theatre including iPod docking and surround sound. The pine cupboard is chock full of DVDs and games and folders with information about places to visit. Wood burning stove in reclaimed brick fireplace with washable fleece mat in front of it for sleepy dogs. There are double French doors opening out into the yard.
Hallway: A big pine drawer and cupboard unit holds much of the doggy stuff – throws, towels, bags etc and the hoover. Hanging space for coats, plenty of room for dog beds/cages and another double set of doors opening out into a covered area before the yard. Log store and extra fridge just outside these doors.
Off the hallway there is the….
Double bedroom: Victorian brass/iron double bed, a pine double wardrobe and bedside tables and drawer unit. Opposite this is the …
Bathroom: Bath and rainfall shower (over bath) with a folding screen. Plenty of storage in the custom built pine unit and the toilet is an old fashioned high line system. Plenty of thick cotton towels and a basket of toiletries. Next along the corridor is…
En-suite bedroom: Comfortable king-size divan bed which can also be two singles (zip and link), antique silk pine wardrobe and substantial bed side drawer units. The modern en-suite shower room has a large walk in shower with rainfall shower head, sink and toilet and storage/mirror unit.
Last but not least…
Small bedroom: Trundle bed which can be a single, twin or king-size double. When double we put on a thick topper which makes it really comfortable. No wardrobe but hanging space on an antiqued rack and hook unit. Chair and small chest of drawers.
Heating: Underfloor from ground source heat pump system complemented by wood burning stove. The underfloor heating is sufficient warmth for all but the very coldest weather and is controlled by individual room thermostats which can be adjusted by guests. The wood burning stove is secondary and a free supply of logs is available in the log store is just outside the hallway French doors.
Outside: The yard is fully walled and gated with substantial outdoor furniture and parasol and a charcoal barbecue as well as the log store and additional fridge. A lovely place to spend an evening and watch the sun go down and the aerial shows by the swallows, bats and barn owl. A very safe space for dogs – most of the yard is paved but there is an area of shingle that some dogs might prefer to toilet on and a full length hose that makes the yard easy to wash down. The barn next door is Running Hare Barn, also dog friendly holiday accommodation but every effort has been made to ensure that the two properties have minimal impact on each other.

Our first time in Norfolk and the Piggery – can’t wait to return. The Piggery was everything and more, it exceeded our expectations. Well equipped, spotless, spacious and comfortable. 5 dogs were safe and well provided for. They loved the toys, garden, beaches and walks from the cottage.
Jan, Ian, Jacqueline and Katie with 5 dogs
Having read all the reviews I didn’t think the Piggery could live up to expectations – I was wrong. Amazing place – relaxation is the only option, long walks with the hounds and lovely food at The Star ! We’ll be back and I can’t wait. Very sad to leave. Thanks.

Or – from the A149 at Stalham, take the turning signposted to Happisburgh, Bacton and Walcott (Stepping Stone Lane). Turn left at the T junction. Continue up this road for approximately 3 miles until you come to a left turn signposted Byway to Fox Hill. (Please do not be tempted to take any of the other turnings into the village, no matter what your sat nav/wife tells you. We have been known to lose guests for days when this happens!) Take this turning and continue down Mill Lane/Road until you reach a sharp bend to the right with a large barn on the right. The Piggery is in the yard of this barn. Parking on the concrete pad behind.
Guestbook - The Old Piggery
From the guest book in the Old Piggery from back when we first started in 2009. We have had some lovely people staying with some equally lovely dogs. We started off adding every single comment but we have whole book loads now so we've just added one or two of the best ones each month! We are very proud of our guest books and very grateful to all our guests for being so kind
This was our first time in Norfolk and the Piggery and it was a fabulous week. The cottage is so well equipped and finally an enclosed garden that really is enclosed! Beautiful beaches and seeing the seals at Horsey!! Lovely meals at the Poachers Pocket and Lighthouse Inn with Mia being made very welcome. The best dog friendly cottage we have stayed in! We hope to visit again!
Lisa, Dan, Linda and Mia July 2017
Another wonderful year at The Old Piggery. Thank you. Highly recommend the Jazz cruise o the Norfolk Broads and hiring a boat for the day and the railway walk at the Bure Valley Railway.
The beach at Bacton is perfect and the Poachers Pocket on the sea front is one of the best dog friendly pubs we've come across. Sea Star Chinese also work a visit. Thank you so much for another perfect holiday.

To Dear Sue and Derm
We LOVE your Old Piggery. Please can we stay!!!
See you soon.
Lots of love
Simon, Speeds, Chris, Hat Karoo, Jambo and Erin
We had a lovely warm welcome from Sue. Was handy knowing about "Elsie" (the wind turbine!) as a landmark for coming home after the lovely days out we all enjoyed. We have had fantastic weather the whole week. Visited Wells Next the Sea - worth the journey. Fantastic dog friendly beach. Felbrigg Hall - lovely woodland walks. Happisburgh - just up the road. Winterton on Sea - lovely beach, sand dunes and great refreshment shop.
Well equipped cottage, was very comfortable for us and our 8 dogs. Dogs loved holiday.

Fab cottage, everything you need for a great holiday. Dogs are tired out, very long walk and run's on beach. Relaxing evenings for the old ladies, can't wait to come back next May, also going to Heather Cottage in November. Love your cottages!
Jeanette, Dawn, Debbi & Linda and Oscar, Ella, Alfie & Mollie - May 2017
Very warm welcome from Sue. Even before we arrived the communication was fab! Warning about lack of signal etc. Very well equipped cottage, the best we’ve been to, all the finishing touches were appreciated by all. So dog friendly we will be showing from the rooftops to all our doggy friends about this beautiful hidden gem. We were very lucky, sunshine everyday. We enjoyed Walcott, Happisburgh, Mundesley and South Yarmouth; all dog friendly. The lighthouse had good food and allowed dogs! The local pub in Happisburgh was so welcoming, Turkey pieces for the dogs on arrival. Comfy beds, home from home but better!! Many many thanks!
Elaine, Keith, Kim and Craig - May 2017
Another very relaxing week at The Piggeries. Weather was cold at the beginning of the week but we still enjoyed the lovely beaches and our usual very dog friendly cafes and pubs. Our favourite beach is Happisburgh, great for the dogs to run, meeting lots of other 'doggie' people ot chat to. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming. Thank you so much Sue and Dermot for another lovely week and hope to see you again.
Ann, Lyn & Sarah and our dogs Barley, Coco, Buddy and Lily - May 2017
Our first visit to The Piggery and we're very impressed with the property and level of equipment was the best we've found. The welcome pack was very much appreciated by both us and the hounds, who made themselves at home straight away. The only fault we can find is that a week passes too quickly here! We've been lucky with the weather and the dogs have enjoyed walks on one beach or another every day, ancient Dudley managing 2-3 miles at a time - not bad for a 12 year old Greyhound! (Jill walked twice as far with all the zigzagging!) Thank you so much for making our holiday very special.
Simon, Monica, Dudley & Jill - April 2017
This was our first visit to The Old Piggery and we were so impressed, it's lovely. So much work and detail has gone in to creating the charm and character of the place. It's both relaxing, homely and very comfortable. Our two dogs Harvey and Max (Pointers) loved all the beach walks especially Sea Palling and Winterton. Bacton Woods is a must, the dogs have certainly worn themselves out with all the running around. Another must see is Horsey Beach, where we saw about 100 seals (dogs didn't go to this one!) They were so close to us and we got some great photos. All in all this has been a great week away and we certainly hope to book again.
Paul, Jo, Harvey & Max - April 2017
All fabulous, we're coming back again for another treat sooner rather than later. The seals on Horsey Gap were quite a sight, Norwich is a lovely town to visit, beautiful beaches at Winterton & Sea Palling. The dog gobbled up all her tasty treats and had a jolly nice week, thank you so much for making her so very welcome. The stars in the sky at night were superb and The Piggery is very comfortable. Thank you so much, see you again soon
Can we move in? Please?! What a beautiful place to stay. We have loved everything about The Old Piggery. Everything has been thought of. We were told about it by a friend who stayed here with her friends and 5 dogs. So we thought we'd give it a go. We are so glad we did. It's in an eviable position (we have been looking at properties for sale but couldn't find anything as perfect!) and has been lovingly designed. You can tell you really love what you do here and have passed it on to your guests. Thank you for the welcome pack - Poppy was very pleased! We would love to come again and will be telling all our friends, with and without dogs, about the fantastic place we have found. So peaceful, makes a lovely change from all the traffic noise we hear daily. Thank you so much, we have loved being here.
Mick, Mandy & Poppy - March 2017
Leaving today after a wonderful week's stay. Really special to find somewhere that is lovely and really truly dog friendly, rather than just paying lip service. (One small dog only, welcome outside only...you know the ones..!) Everything here, dogs just loved it just as we did. Three dogs split between 2 parties - all rescue - one very hairy and been with us for 4 weeks - perfect place for them to make strong friendships with each other, which they have. They've loved visiting the dog friendly beaches and cafes as we have. We will be looking at returning for sure. Thank you
Roy, Maddie, John, Beau Ruby and Becs - March 2017
Another amazing holiday at The Piggery. This is the 8th year we have been!!! (Possibly 9!?) Checked! It's 9 years! We have had a lot of wine and prosecco, lovely food and some movie nights. Beach walks have been amazing - Sea Palling, Horsey & Winterton on Sea. Had an unexpected encounter with a seal! Hidden in the rocks - Steph went in to grab the tennis ball and did not see the sea disguised as a rock! Much screaming and running up sand dunes! Ha ha!
Love Sam, Carole, Finn & Ted, Jack, Charlotte, Jenson, Steph, Poppy and Twig! - February 2017
We have had a lovely relaxing week in this homely Piggery, it seems so welcoming, it seems to wrap itself around you, the weather has not been great somedays but who cares, we were warm & cosy, with all the essentials we needed. Our two Terriers (elderly) have also enjoyed it, one is blind and deaf but has a great sense of smell and has enjoyed qorking his noise around all the lovely scents in the courtyard.Thank you Sue & Dermot. Hope to come again in the future.
Hazel, Norman, Jack & Ziggy - February 2017
Directly we walked in the lovely warm atmosphere seemed to wrap around us and we felt at home immediately, my daughter said the same when she came to stay later for two days. We were astounded at the amount of things which were provided, especially the welcome pack of 'Goodies', right up to the day we left we were saying "Oh look this is here". Wood burner (with stock of wood), washing machine, dishwasher, freezer and an abundance of other items, in fact everything you could possibly wish for a holiday was included. Dogs were provided for with Beds, Bowls,Toys,Towels, including goodies for them, also for us awaiting our arrival. Our beds were so comfortable we did not want to get up, (well it was winter). Dog walks right outside the door, safe enclosed garden at rear, one of our dogs is blind and deaf had a wonderful time roaming around sniffing all the doggy smells lingering there, WE CANNOT RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH and thank Sue and Dermot for providing such comfortable accommodation.
Norman, Hazel,Jack and Ziggy.February 2017
Our fourth visit to The Piggery and one we;ve been looking forward to all year. This place just has it all and more, with the perfect setting and surroundings to escape from your doorstep, to a short drive to the fabulous beaches. But most of all you just feel so at home in The Piggery as it's just soooo perect for us and our three Vizslas. So what better place to spend our Christmas. Thank you so much Sue & Dermot. It truly has been brilliant again. Best wishes for 2017 guys.
Warren, Debs, Jack & Morgan and Skye, Inca & Orla - December 2017
We have been to many East Ruston cottages but never The Piggery! Always booked up, so when it had a cancellation we were ecstatic! Sue & Dermot are great hosts. The Piggery, how perfect and it is definitely a home from home. Sue has got The Piggery so right. We loved ou week here. Thank you Sue & Dermot for our welcome pack and making our stay so lovely. P.S we will defo be back!
Sandra, Andy & Arnie - November 2016
Our first visit to The Piggery and when we first walked through the door, we thought 'Oh no, its too posh for the dogs...it so luxurious!' How wrong we were. Everything was so easy, comfortable and fab! We and the six pooches felt so at ease and comfortable. The welcome goodies for us all were great and the underfloor heating and the shower were absolute luxury. As for Norfolk, we have visited Hunstanton area several times, but here it is so beautiful and great for our mixed breed and mixed ability pooches. The seals and their pups at Horsey were awesome. We enjoyed Winterton as the dunes suited everyone and the cafe was brill (esp the norfolk shortbread with cream and jam). We ate and drank at the Hill House in Happisburgh and Lighthouse Inn. Its done the trick - we've walked, relaxed and recharged. Ready for next year. Thanks Sue and Dermot and Jane - Good Work
How wonderful when a cottage exceeds your expectations! An absolutely beautiful place and wonderfully well equipped. Everything we could have wished for and more. Much larger than it appears on the website photos. Super to come in to all the lovely goodies. We have had to seek out the jam maker/fudge maker/dog treat lady - all very yummy! The dogs Jake and Spud have enjoyed their stay - cosy beds by the log burner - big safely enclosed yard and a great walk straight from their back/front door to the lane and footpaths beyond, simply doggie heaven. Places we would recommend for a visit (anywhere) but especially Wroxham for a trip by boat around the broads, Horsey to see the seals and a trip to the Nelson Pub or Poppylands and Blakeney for a seal watching boat trip. FAITH animal rescue Hickling - Margaret has a new dog coming home with us today! She will no doubt be returning on holiday next year! Sea Palling - great beach, dog friendly cafes and amusements. Pubs - Greyhound in Hickling for a great Sunday lunch, Pleasureboat Hickling, Kings Head Wroxham and Hill House Happisburgh (all pubs very dog friendly). Just wish we didnt have to leave this gorgeous place. Thanks Sue and Dermot, so lovely to meet you both. See you next time
Jo, Margaret, Laura, Jake and Spud - October 2016
Our first visit to Norfolk. What a joy! The beaches were really fantastic for our two dogs - they really loved it! The Piggery was absolutely wonderful, pleasure to come back to every day. Wednesday, rain poured down all day, so after initial walk of the day we were happy just to relax here (never done that before). Everything we could wish for - great holiday. Thanks to you both for making it special.
Eileen, Bob, Reggie and Jasper - October 2016
What a lovely week! The weather was fantastic, high twenties all week! We went to Cart Gap and Winterton beaches. Walking in the dunes at Winterton was especially peaceful even though the carpark was packed. Going to Bacton Woods on a warm day was nice and cool. Dont forget to go to Bacton fish and chip shop afterwards! We had another fantastic lunch at The Star Inn Lessingham, the friendliest pub anywhere. Thanks to Sue the landlady and Gary the chef! All four of our dogs enjoyed themselves even if they dont walk as far as they used to when we originally came in 2009. Thanks again to Sue and Dermot for a fantastic holiday!
Rod and Julie - Indy Max Ruby and Scruff - September 2016
OMG What a lovely place the Old Piggery is! We have had a great holiday and so have our 11 dogs!! We cant wait for next year to come again. Hope all was well when we left when we had 44 paws with us! PS the Swan in Stalham has been great for a meal and no trouble helping us.
Sharon, Rob and Larry and dogs - August 2016
First visit to the Old Piggery and it has been fab! Derm has been really helpful! Horsey beach was great to see the seals - mind you my 4 cockers were barking so much I think they came to see the commotion! We were very luck to see 4 seal pups released to the sea. It was a lovely cottage to check into and very handy dog walks. The Butchers Arms is a must! Thank you Sue and Dermot
Sally, Jack, Mark, Uncle Rod, dogs - H, Mikey, Dottie and stone collector Ruby - August 2016
Fantastic weather! We all had a terrific time. Favourite beach is Eccles North Gap. Not fantastic parking but the beach almost deserted every day. Smallsticks Cafe at Cart Gap for fish and chips on Thursday and Friday night. Paddy the beagle loved his two beds and running up and down the beach! Great times as always. Thanks
Morrisey family and Paddy the beagle - August 2016
Third visit to this place and once again, a fab holiday! Can't fault The Old Piggery or surrounding beaches - Happisburgh, Sea Palling, Cart Gap and Winterton. Great walks on the beaches, kids loved playing on the beaches and the dog is shattered! The owner of The Old Piggery (Sue and Derm) have been great again! Always helpful and there if you need them. Thank you Sue and Derm, you really do have a great place to come to, to relax as well as to enjoy our holiday and its certainly a dog friendly cottage. Hope to make a fourth visit, The kids love the place, the space is great to run around inside
Tim, Ranj, Ajay and Ayeesha and Chubbas - August 2016
Arrived at The Piggery for the second time. Just wonderful, perfect home from home. Thank you Sue and Dermot for the goodies, the dog treats were much appreciated! First swim at Happisburgh in the late afternoon. Online shopping from Sainsburys arrived bang on time - so easy! Also Truly Local in Stalham is unique - truly local produce. Sunday off to the beach at Happisburgh - lovely beach, very warm, clean loos. Doggie heaven little cafe run by local residents. Other days - early morning dog walks and swims. Winterton beach perfect for dog walks. Lovely pub lunch at the Fishermans Return. Beach Cafe also worth a visit. Stalham Staithe for boat hire (Barton Broad) - five hours on the boat - lots of places to stop, peaceful and relaxing. Two adults, two boys and three dogs. Ross Wildlife boattrips from Horsey Windpump Site (Nat Trust carpark). Ross is a mine of information and the three quarter of an hour trip is wonderful for bird watching and for anyone interested in wildlife on the broads. Fish and chips at the Kingfisher in Walcott is delicious. Less than 10 minutes in the car. Although it is a 45 minute journey we have visited the Pigs at Edgefield many times and always found it excellent. Dogs allowed in the room near the bar (we took 4). The food isnt cheap but it is really worth the journey. There is a childrens menu and a play area outside for younger children.
Hi everyone, my name is Anya and I am six. I enjoyed staying here and I enjoyed looking at the beach and the stars. My favourite beach was Sea Palling - great for kids and dogs too! We left a bag of ice because it is going to be hot at the weekend. We love the shower - I even had a shower every night.
Thank you - we have had a lovely week and the fossil hunting was successful thank you (or we would never had heard the end of it!!) Anya has decided she wants to live here as you have the best strawberries! Love
The Jones' family and dog - August 2016
Our second fantastic stay at The Piggery, thank you both. It wont be our last! Honey, Mouse, Griff and Gus reckon this is the best place ever. Comfy dog beds, treats and a drawer full of toys and obedient humans. What more could they want? For the humans, dog friendly beaches, the most beautiful coast imaginable and wonderful dog-friendly pubs and restaurants. Above all, though - wonderful hosts, just perfect! We all love this part of Norfolk - see you next year!
Ali, Steve, Dylan, Lois and Jan - July 2016
What can I say, other than what all the guests have said before. The Old Piggery is amazing - truly a home from home. We never have been anywhere so dog friendly. We found the best place to eat by far is The Star at Lessingham and can thoroughly recommend the Broads Tours at Wroxham. There are also lots of walks from the doorstep either across the fields or on the quiet lanes round about, but please be aware of ticks. A big thank you to Sue and Dermot for a job well done!
Nick, Rose and Milo - July 2016
Thank you for a wonderful holiday. The cottage is absolutely perfect and East Ruston is beautiful. Our four legged friend has enjoyed every second of her first holiday. Welcome pack was much appreciated and local produce was lovely. Bailey especially loved the Neros Kitchen dog biscuits - so much we had to stock up to take some back to Wolverhampton! We would definitely recommend the boat trip at Hoveton and the Old Mill restaurant as well as the tour at the English Whisky Company. Brilliant holiday!
Kevin, Beverley, Steph, Dan and Bailey - July 2016
Lovely time at The Piggery, totally perfect for our doggies. Dogs have had fun at Sea Palling, Happisburgh and Holkham beach. For a special occassion eat at The Swan at Ingham. Food is scrummy. Winterton on Sea for lovely walks and the food is good at The Fishermans Return. Our week went too fast.
Jan, Tracey, Sue, Chrissy and Holly, Henry, Cocoa, Lia and Tilly - June 2016
Thank you Sue and Dermot for providing such a beautifully equipped property. We've really loved our stay here. It's felt very much a home from home. The dogs have had an amazing time too, visiting all the local beaches. Cart Gap was the favourite locally, nice quiet beach (if a little pebbly for delicate Willows toes). We all loved Winterton-On-Sea - mahoosive sandy beach, plenty of scope for off the lead looning away from the nature reserve - VERY GOOD CAFE!!! As always, our favourite pub got a couple of visits. The Star Inn at Lessingham. THE most friendly establishment, UBER dog friendly and fantastic food and beers. Highly recommended for Sunday lunch. We have slept like a dream, which is hard for me (normally I dont sleep well away from home) so thank you for providing a haven of peace and comfort. We are all very sad to leave but we will return.
Sarah and John with Jensen, Willow and Mildred (the lurchers) - June 2016
We have enjoyed our stay. Good luck with the enterprise next door. It sounds exciting. Lovely week and lovely weather - hope the opening of the new barn goes well. Best wishes

This is an amazing place. Must be our 7th year. We come twice a year and just love it!! Sue and Dermot are great friends. The cottage is always amazing and we love it. We go home feeling awesome. Thank you. Shame Sophie wasnt able to be here - she loves it!!
Sue, Jeff, Kerry, Cocoa, Daisy and Cleo - May 2016
Had a lovely second stay here, peaceful, comfortable and so relaxing. Dogs enjoyed the dog beds provided - obviously more comfortable than their own! Lots of good walks on the beaches, down the Loke and to the Butchers Arms for a good beer or two. Had a really tasty meal at The Gunton Arms (worth a visit). Bought some goodies at Truly Local at Stalham and a good curry take away at Oasis at Stalham. A week goes by far too quick, had a great stay. Thank you. Thank you for all the treats on arrival!
Laura, Pete, Bella and Gracie - May 2016
A return to the wonderful Piggery. Fewer outdoor activities planned due to the weather but but a joy to spend time in such luxurious surroundings. A warm welcome with lots of home comforts, enjoyed by humans and dogs alike. A perfect getaway! Thank you! Look forward to booking our next visit.
Barbara, Anne, Betty, Jack and Taylor (border collies) - April 2016
First time at The Piggery and it wont be the last. Loved the welcome, the warmth, the comfy beds (for us humans and the dogs!) It was all fab. Norfolk even laid on sunshine for our stay! Sad to have to go home early this time. Love
Amanda, Penny, Toto, Alfie and Flossie - April 2016
Had a very relaxing break, lots of walking on the beaches, dodging the showers! The seals at Horsey were wonderful. The Piggery was wonderful again
Ann, Lynn, Sarah, Barley, Coco and Buddy - April 2016
First time at The Old Piggery and first time with East Ruston Cottages absolutely top marks. Excellent - its the first time that the dogs have been made to feel so welcome. This truly is a dog friendly holiday home as my grandchildren call it. Its been great that the dogs have been accepted at so many tourist attractions too. Norfolk puts other holiday destinations to shame - many are only dog tolerant. The Piggery is so well equipped for everyone, its unbelieveable. Thank you for making it easy for us. Looking forward to returning to The Old Piggery or one of the other holiday cottages, to explore more. Keep up the good work, you deserve all the praise you get. Many, many thanks
Kay, Trevor, Vicky, Nathan, Mike, Hudson, Pepsi, Maggie and Smartie - March 2016
Thank you so much for a wonderful stay at The Old Piggery. You have thought of everything. A delightful cottage -I will certainly be back. Thank you for a great few days at the Old Piggery. We had so much fun. Lovely rooms and loved the cakes you left.
Ellie, Clare and Lolly - February 2016
Our first time at the Old Piggery and what a fantastic experience. Every comfort (both for us and for the dogs) has been thoughtfully provided. WE LOVED IT and will try to book again for next winter too. Thank you so much - the welcome was wonderful (and I also enjoyed swapping aviation anecdotes with Dermot)
Pete and Wendy, Peter and Cosie and Cimo and Anja the Bernese Mountain Dogs - January 2016
Another lovely relaxing stay. The Westies think its our second home. Haha! We wish. The seals at Horsey are worth a visit - so many pups this year. Cant wait to come back next year.
Jim, Vanessa and the Westie Gang, Hamish, Archie and Pippa - December 2015
Our first stay in the Old Piggery and pretty sure it wont be our last! It is just perfect for dogs and their people. We all loved the under-floor heating and peaceful location. Many thanks! See you soon!
Laura, Luna and Tucker, Angela, Moss, Millie and Oak, Ashleigh, Summer and Harvey – October 2015
Another great relaxing holiday spent in the Old Piggery. Weather wonderful, except for one day which is not bad going at this time of year. Dogs felt very much at home and loved the beach walks. Thank you – the wonderful welcome goodies to both humans and dogs!
Caroline and Alistair, Barney and Daisy – October 2015
What a wonderful dog friendly and comfortable place to stay - the wait was well worth it! Many thanks for the welcome goodies - the best we have ever received. So nice to stay in a place that treats dogs on equal terms with humans. Would recommend a trip to Truly Local shop in Stalham and Kisi who do alot more than head collars. Daisy and Barney loved their trip to the shop and we came away with Christmas pressies and lots more. Favourite beaches for a football crazy collie included Happisburgh and further afield Hunstanton. PS if anyone finds a football at Sea Palling beach, its ours (well Barneys). Last seen drifting out to sea....Luckily a replacement was purchased in Cromer.
Caroline and Alistair, Barney and Daisy and the outlaws Brian and Pat - October 2015
Again, another amazing week. We always have an awesome stay. Just dont know what we would do without it!! We took Coco to the beach and chilled out. Was great to see the brn developing. Thank you both for a wonderful place.
Susan and Jeff xx Woof from Coco x - September 2015
As usual, the best dog friendly holiday cottage ever - and the humans are well provided for too! Wonderful walks on the beach and lots of dog friendly pubs nearby that also provide food - what more could you want? See you again - same time next year
Trevor and Jackie, Benji, Purdie and Louie - September 2015
Only our second doggie holiday as we lived in Portugal and UK holidays spent visiting family. Went to Durham last year, thought we would be going back but not after spending time here. The Piggery is 10 times better – much more dog and human friendly. Cant fault our stay, loved every second. Weather mixed but didnt stop us. Please dont stop welcome packs for both dogs and humans – a real lovely touch. Recommend Bure Valley Railway. Deka thought it was great to sit on the seat and hang head out of windows. Found Happisburgh and Waxham the best dpg friendly beaches for this time of year. Bacton Woods great for kids and dogs alike. Waxham Barn Cafe lovely courtyard to sit out in the sun, shared lunch with lots of wasps. Recommend the steak at the Butchers Arms pub in East Ruston. We have had a great week, thanks for a lovely home from home. We will be back hopefully.
Dee, Lawrence, Rhiannon, Carol, Megan (Deka, Jaze, Molly) – August 2015

Third visit and this time with 10 dogs! Just as perfect as I remember and the welcome addition of wifi means I won't get home to 6,000 e-mails like last time! The mixed weather didn't spoil things at all as we were so warm and cosy indoors. The dogs as always loved the beach and ran their legs off every day! Sue and Dermot are so welcoming and friendly, the perfect hosts! We can't wait for next time.

We have had the most relaxing and wonderful time at the Old Piggery! Our little man Elliot loved crawling around and going to the beach. When the in-laws came for a long weekend with the dogs we thoroughly enjoyed morning and evening walks at the beach (Cart Gap is a firm family fave!) Our family has been coming for years so it really is a home from home!
Bryony, Richard and Elliot, John and Julie with Finn, Stanley and Clarence - October 2013
Dear Sue and Dermot, Please don't make us leave!! What a wonderful week. Cheers! Prost! Gesondheit! Salute! And of course a massive THANK YOU.
Caroline, Noo Noo, Jack, Neil, Christopher and Kitchener and Karoo - October 2013
As usual the best dog friendly holiday cottage ever - and the humans are well provided for too. Wonderful walks on the beach, lots of dog friendly pubs nearby that also provide food - what more could you want. See you again - same time next year xx
Trevor and Jackie with Beryl, Purdey and Louie - September 2013
Well I've lost count now at the amount of years we have been coming here (old age!) but you know what, it still has a place in our hearts. Our pets - Megs and Murphy who died - would still have loved this place. Thanks to Sue and Dermot for making it our "heaven".
Sue and Jeff - September 2013
You forget how nice the Piggery is until you open the door again for your visit, then it's our "Home from Home" again for the week. Weather wet and rough some days and warm and sunny others but log burner makes the weather inconsequential. The 3 dogs all loved it and can't wait to come back. Thanks again Sue and Dermot. See you again soon.
Andrew and Carol with Yogi, Sky and Trio - September 2013
This is our third visit to the Piggery - our first in summer. Had some lovely walks on Winterton beach - no dog restrictions. Visited Blickling Hall and ate at the Buckinghamshire Arms there - very nice and good walks. Lots of lovely walks from the door. Fish and chips at Walcott are amazing and the ice cream parlour next door is brilliant for food and ice cream - owners have Greyhounds, dogs allowed in the cafe - children on leads!! Cottage is as lovely as ever, welcome pack is much appreciated. Had fantastic weather again. Hope to be back soon.
Claire and Alistair with Tiny - August 2013
Absolutely loved the Piggery. 8 hounds together, plenty of space and so quiet too. We've had a wonderful week, don't want to go home!
Sue, Mark and Matt with Willow, Joe, Jake, Delta, Roy and Trevor - August 2013
Our first visit to the Piggery - a wonderful, peaceful and thoughtful place to stay. So great to find somewhere where all the dogs can be as comfortable as us! Sorry to see this fabulous week come to an end.
Fran and Ian with Nico and Mak - August 2013
Our first visit here, the Piggery is one of the most comfortable places we have been and we have done lots of cottages. The yard is great for the dogs, no fear of them escaping and being terriers they are very very good at that. The weather has been very kind to us and we have spent most evenings sat outside in the sun. We have had good food at the Butchers in the village - very good food and value for money. At the other end of the scale we have eaten at the Ingham Swan which is excellent. Our only complaint is that time has gone too quickly!! Thanks Sue and Dermot for all the thought you have put into the Piggery (we will be back).
Judy and Chris with Tiny, Oliver and Pippin (the mad Jacks!!) - July 2013
Another lovely Piggery holiday and good weather this year! Thank you for arranging that! See you November 2014 xx.

4th visit and just as relaxing and welcome as previous visits. Thanks for everything - no wonder the Old Piggery is so popular.
Geoff and Sue with Kaiser - June 2013
We have had a lovely week. The Piggery is so dog friendly. Our old retriever Lily appreciated the soft dog bed and non-slip floors. Dogs loved Bacton Woods and Winterton-on-Sea. We would love to come back, just got to wait for a vacancy!
Jackie, Mike and 4 dogs Rufus, Inca, Layla and Lily - June 2013
Thank you for a lovely week at the Piggery. Although 'dogless' we had two children to entertain and entertain them we did! They adored Bewilderwood where they made twiggie turrets, Wroxham Barns, a trip up Happisburgh Lighthouse, paddling at Sea Palling to name but a few! A great base, many thanks x.
James, Nikki, Paul, Daisy, Eliza and Chloe - May 2013
As usual had a great week. Mixed weather, but overall pretty good. Shock to find stairs down to beach at Happisburgh no longer exist but very good new approach and car park from Beach Road. Many thanks to Sue and Dermot, father-in-law loved the jam especially and dogs loved treats and we all loved cake.
Jenny, Richard, Donna, Dick and dogs Ellie, Dillon and Lyra - May 2013.
We had a really nice stay in the lovely Old Piggery. Perfect for a holiday with the dogs. Thank you and see you at St Benets in July.

Jim, Vanessa and Grandma with Katie, Hamish and Archie "The Westie Gang" - Aprill 2013
We waited 18 months! We have had a lovely 3 night break. The Piggery is an excellent base for visiting the lovely beaches of NE Norfolk and tranquil walks around the Broads. East Ruston Old Vicarage Gardens was stunning, despite freezing temperatures and few flowers! Best pub and food - Star at Lessingham.
Nick and Carol with Pippin and Merry - March 2013
Waited 2 years to get in here and it was worth the wait. All three dogs loved it and the walks were just what they wanted. Had a fab meal at The Lighthouse for Paul's 40th birthday. This cottage had all we needed and more. Thanks for having us xx. We are already booked for 2014 and 2015!!
Dom and Paul with Tula, Willie and Taya - March 2013
Although the weather wasn't kind the cottage is lovely and so very dog friendly. Managed some cold, windy walks on the beach and always a relief to come back to the warm cosy Piggery! Obviously now the weather is improving we have to go but have thoroughly enjoyed our stay, as have the dogs. Thanks so much.
Jane and Sian - March 2013
Second visit to the Piggery and still fab! Loved Truly Local - definately shop there next time. Also excellent fish shop at Happisburgh. Recommend Oasis Indian Takeaway - yummy! Don't know where the week has gone and don't want to leave! So relaxing. Thank you for the eggs and the ginger cake - Simon's fave! I might have to learn how to bake. See you next March, can't wait xxx.
Zoe and Simon with Bella and Barley - February 2013
Our second stay here - just as good as the first! Your house is wonderful - warm, cosy and welcoming . We had a lovely meal at the Star at Lessingham- definately recommend, truly dog friendly pub. See you next year, thanks.

Exceptionally comfortable and homely accommodation. Dogs loved the garden and the warm beds. Loved the ginger cake on arrival - we are now off to buy some more! We would love to move in here. Hopefully we will be back soon.
Clive, Moira, Niamh and Declan with Hamish, Twix, Scooby and Kipling - February 2013
Been lucky with the weather, cool, blustery and sometimes sunshine. Loved Truly Local, great produce, helpful staff and the wonderful butchers Cawdrons' in Stalham High Street - kept the dogs happy with bones and chicken carcasses (the humans didn't do so bad either). Also loved the "I am on holiday" dog tags, thank you - great idea and well used out and about on all the local beaches. Dogs loved all the beaches but Happisburgh, Cart Gap and Sea Palling they loved and enjoyed a run and walk along Cromer beach and promenade. Saw the owl three times but never with a camera.
Julie & Keith with Willow, Fizz and Bugsy - February 2013
Lovely welcome treats again (thanks Sue). Another great week - the snow melted - some rain, but despite the gales we had a relaxing week, with walks up 'the Loke' and on Cart Gap/Happisburgh and Horsey beaches. Thanks Sue and Dermot x (see you again next time).

Can’t praise the Old Piggery enough, home to home. Definitely be a ‘next time’, not just me though, my wife Julie and a few four footed friends too.
Denis - November 2012
Thank you very much for a lovely stay at the Old Piggery and the little goodies provided, the hounds appreciated the biscuits! We had long walks on our favourite beach (Mundesley) and visited Happisburgh, Horsey Windpump and Blickling Hall. We saw a few seals in the sea and plenty of pheasants in the fields. Hope to return soon!

When you go back to places you find your memory has played tricks and things are not as good as you remember - not this time! The Piggery is wonderful, equipped with everything you could possibly need for a super holiday and instead of paying lip service to being 'dog friendly' really is! Thank you for everything. Can't wait to come back, yet again.
Jackie and Trevor with Purdy, Louie, Lucy, Cassie and Benji September 2012

1st visit. What a fab place and the welcome pack, especially the brownies, was greatly appreciated. Loved the location, lovely beaches and great walks. Icing on the cake was seeing the seals at Horsey. Thanks Sue for recommending Sea Palling, Waxham and Horsey (beaches). Must admit this place was well equipped, up to date and clean which makes you want to come back. Chubbas loved the freedom of being able to run around the fields and beaches. So did Ajay whilst learning to walk. Fantastic break. See you in 2014 xxx
Tim, Ranj and Ajay (toddler) and Chubbas the Rottie August 2012
Our 4th visit, relaxing as always for adults and dogs. When we arrived they all ran straight in as if they knew where they were!! Interesting to see the turbin in action. Pity the thatching didn't start this week. Weather was great all week, but Cart Gap quiet as usual except for the Saturday. See you next October (2013)

The Piggery worked its magic again and soothed our frazzled nerves - we could feel the stress slipping away as we entered the house. Sophie lab had a smile on her face as soon as we arrived. She remembered the fantastic time we had in March. The dogs loved the beach and the field and the freedom. This is a truly dog friendly area which is such a pleasure. Lunch at the Star at Lessingham was superb and the poeple lovely - highly recommended! While here this trip we checked out Hickling and Red Roofs looks a lovely house - we had lunch in the Pleasure Boat in by the water there - very friendly (dogs very welcome) and the Fish Chowder was especially good! Also lunched at Butchers Arms and Hill House - made us and dogs very welcome and food excellent. Run each morning to Walcott along to Happisburgh via beach. Need to check out high tides as we realise just how far it comes in now! Many thanks.
Jenny, Richard and Donna plus our 3 Samoyeds December 2011
What a lovely place. Great to find somewhere that says is dog friendly and really is! So often places will only take '2 small dogs' and as ours are so much bigger it's hard to find somewhere to go. Cottage is lovely and so warm. Peaceful location and great for the dogs early morning and last thing at night walks.
We have all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and really been relaxed. This was our first visit and we hope not our last - if of course we can find an unbooked week!

Victoria, Mikey, Romeo, John, Shell, Craig and Gemma plus 7 dogs July 2011
"Arrived back from The Old Piggery yesterday having spent a week there with family and five dogs between us. We couldn't believe how lovely the accommodation was, we would have been very impressed even if it wasn't a dog friendly place but given how dog friendy it is we were blown away! Highlight of the week was seeing lots of seals just feet from the shore at Horsey beach...we are sure they were watching us right back! Thanks Dermot and Sue for providing the foundations to a lovely holiday!
Jayne, Andy, Baby Will, Clarice, Keith and 5 doggy family members July 2011
We've only been with our new family a few weeks and never dreamed that life could be so good - what a holiday! Our legs are a little tired as Cart Gap has a big beach and we're fairly small. The rest of the pack enjoyed it too with walks along the Broads they hadn't been on before. Our humans loved the cottage and apparently we're coming back again next year. Sue and Dermott (the 'maintenance man') - thanks for providing a superb cottage for the whole family.
Purdey and Louie, Lucy, Cassie and Benji with humans Trevor and Jackie June 2011
Wonderful cottage, light, spacious and airy. Cosy and well equipped with welcoming personal touches. The brownies and eggs were soon eaten. Weather mixed but who cares with the Piggery to come back to. The Bridge restaurant at Wroxham served a lovely lunch (outside with the dogs watching the boats go by) See you again in 2012.

The Piggery is brilliant, light and airy and in a beautiful spot. The attached barn adds to this. As others have mentioned you can see why it's always booked up. Just to let you know we had a great holiday and see you soon.

We have had an amazing week in a perfect cottage . The weather has been beautiful, not too much snow and the walking is brilliant. We recommend Bacton woods and the Happisburgh coastal walk (if it's not too windy!) The walks from the cottage are great too - especially in the snow. We didn't manage to get to the coast this time but recommend Eccles/Sea Palling and Winterton.
The cottage has everything you could possibly need and the log burner is super. Tiny is worn out and says he needs new paws! Thank you Sue and Dermot for a wonderful week. We will definitely be back - if we can find a vacant week!!! Don't forget to try the fish shop in Happisburgh. Thanks again.

We will be back in the future.

First class accommodation. Thank you for arranging the birthday cake and letting the girls feed the lambs. We had a lovely holiday and had a brilliant day at Holkham - well worth the journey. Both dogs are exhausted and very content.

Perfect holiday cottage. Everything I needed was here. Comfy beds - comfy everything. Even the weather was good. Best cottage we have stayed in - hope to be back.

Many thanks! Beautiful place. Dogs had a great time as did we. Recommend Hound Hike and Better Greyhound Gallop.

Such a lovely, comfortable, cosy cottage, that made us feel so welcome. Very relaxing week. Wonderful wildlife just outside the door, great walks. The Barn Owl showed off several times! Butchers Arms pub friendly and good food. Cart Gap best beach for walking dogs and catching a glimpse of a seal. Very kind and helpful owners. A very big thank you to Dermot and Sue. The Old Piggery is a very special place!
Sandra, Darren, Ashley, Jordan, Gladys and Peter and Chester the dog - Feb 2009
Fabulous accommodation - the attention to detail and the thoughtfulness put into the Old Piggery is second to none. You have thought of absolutely everything and created a real home from home - a dream home at that! The location is great with easy access to a number of beaches and walks - the dogs have loved every minute - although the little ones only got up out of duress this morning! Thank you for everything - we definitely plan to be back.
Tony and Maria with Chip, Charlie and Barnie - Feb 2009
Had a great weekend - probably (?) the first Labrador Forums Old Piggery Get Together. Sure it won't be the last. Everything we and our hounds could have wished for - it's been Labrador heaven. Walks on the beach, in the woods and round the fields. We met curious seals in the sea and saw a stunning barn owl hunting in the hedge. Thanks for everything Sue and Dermot. We will be recommending The Old Piggery to all our friends!
Sam, Marie and Helen with Finn, Coal, Baxter, Darcie, Bosun and Rosie dogs. All from Beds, Bucks and Herts - Feb 2009
(They also put some lovely little illustrations of the dogs in the guest book. I'll try and work out a way to replicate them here.)
A fantastic place!! Wonderful to find somewhere lovely that the dog is allowed in too (and the kids!) Too much to see in a short time so it's no good - we'll have to come back! Thanks so much x
