East Ruston Cottages

White Cottage, Happisburgh

Sleeps 6

White Cottage is a 200 year old, sympathetically renovated cottage in the village of Happisburgh with views across fields to the iconic red and white striped lighthouse. The sandy and dog friendly beach is so close that you can hear and smell the sea and is a short walk away, as is the dog friendly village pub, shop, excellent fresh fish shop and local cafes. There are easy rural walks from the door and many of the other beaches are a few minutes away in the car.

The house is extremely dog friendly with a large, grass, fully fenced garden, no neighbours and lots of hard floors, storage space and conservatory for drying off after a swim in the sea or sleeping in the sunny spot.

Throughout the house the owners have indulged their love of dogs and there are many beautiful examples of dog art and tasteful decorations to make the house feel really homely. They have sourced a wonderful selection of easy, comfy furniture to make you and your dogs feel very much at home from the minute you arrive.

When you arrive: Parking is off road in a fenced and gated area at the front of the house. From here, access to the secure garden and the house is through the high, solid and lockable gate at the side of the house. Entrance to the house is through the large, heated conservatory, one of two, with a tiled floor, 3 seater sofa and plenty of hanging space for your coats and dog leads. Just off this is….

Downstairs shower room and separate toilet.

Entrance into the main part of the house is through the original old pine door with stained glass panels.

Kitchen Diner: Old tiles on the floor and beams in the ceiling with a feature fireplace give this room a really comfortable feel and reflect the age of the cottage. Pine table and chairs at one end and shaker style kitchen at the other end. Range cooker, dishwasher, microwave and plenty of cupboards, well equipped with crockery, cutlery and cooking equipment. The ulitity room just off this has a fridge/freezer, washing machine and lots of hooks and storage space. The original pine door leads into the…..

Living room: Lovely big room with polished floorboards, beams and wood burner in feature fireplace. Two big comfy leather sofas and a big leather armchair are perfect for relaxing in front of the flat screen tv with surround sound and dvd player or just watching the fire blaze. Some beautiful pictures and ornaments make this room really special and the window seats show just how thick the walls of this lovely old house are.

And if you ‘want to be alone’ you can go next door into the …

Snug: More pine flooring in this cosy little room with a comfy sofa, rug, book shelves and a printer’s tray mounted on the wall; guests are invited to add their little beach combing finds to this tray for others to enjoy. Just through the double doors is the…

Summer Room: The second, smaller conservatory is ideal for sunny days and has double doors leading out into the garden. Wonderful for letting the light and air into the house on a sunny day and has two comfy chairs with a beautiful view of the garden.

Upstairs
A door off the kitchen leads up the straight and carpeted stairs to the landing, running the length of the house. Off this is…

Bedroom 1: Superking size bed with bedside tables, chair and built in wardrobe and shelves behind tasteful Shaker style doors.

Bedroom 2: Twin Shaker style trundle beds (can be single or twins), small antique wardrobe, hanging hooks and shelf. Unusual landscape window gives a view across the fields to the lighthouse.

Bedroom 3: Double bed, antique wood with slatted head and foot board with carved decorative detail. Lovely oak wardrobe, chest of drawers and chair.

Bathroom: Large shower cubicle (new for December 2017) with drench shower head, separate bath, toilet and sink. Views over the garden and to the lighthouse beyond.

Outside: Fully dog proof large, grass garden with shrubs. The majority of the fencing (and gate) is solid panel and approx 6ft high The hedged area is backed up by small mesh stock fencing (we consider that a Chihuahua puppy or dog of similar size might be able to squeeze through here at a push) . There is a warm tap/hose in the garden, for you to wash your dogs.

A few of the hundreds of wonderful comments from our guestbook

Our first visit to White Cottage – what a wonderful week we have had. We love the cottage , so did the dogs who also enjoyed the large garden. We climbed the lighthouse and had severaql visits to the beach. The highlight of the week was the seals at Horsey beach. Many thanks for giving us an enjoyable holiday. Hopefully we will be back again soon

Charlie - Sept 2017

We have had the best holiday ever! We have 3 big dogs and children ranging from 5 to 19 so finding somewhere for everyone is always tricky! White cottage ticks all the boxes! Beautiful beach within a 5 minute walk, quiet little villages and lovely dog friendly pubs. Plenty for the kids to do, they went to Go Ape, Horsey beach hillside carnival, Cromer pier, cinema in Norwich and a day trip to visit friends in Great Yarmouth! It is so refreshing to be able to let our dogs on the sofas, wonder around unrestricted in the house… really takes a lot of stress out of the holiday! Wonderful welcome gift and everything that we could possibly need was right here, you really have thought of everything. Sad to leave but we will be back!
Thank you for an amazing holiday

Connor, Matthew and Adam - August 2017

Ruth and Family – August 2017

Beautiful cottage! Clearly well loved and we also loved it too! Thank you! We had a lovely week and enjoyed lots of beach time at various beaches as well as lots of different cafe food. We also tried a day out in Norwich and that was lovely too!

Fabulous cottage, excellent base to explore the local area. Loved walking the dogs down to the coast to the Kingfisher cafe, Walcott. Exploring Winterton sands was a highlight (excellent sandwiches at the Dunes cafe) everything was so fab and dog friendly- thank you!

Chapman and Chan family – July 2017

Only been here for 1 day but I just had to write how wonderful White cottage is. We are already working out how we can stay here forever!! We have now visited several beaches and had some great walks being an early bird, Norfolk is beautiful in the mornings!! Its been great to put the kettle on and sit in the garden with the dogs. The weather has been fabulous, Bacton woods is always a favourite with the dogs and Cart Gap beach is our favourite. Lunch at The Star in Lessingham was great as was the cream tea at Smallsticks. Delicious crab, prawns and cockles from the Fairmaiden fish shop in the village. Would love to come back when we’ve visited all East Ruston Cottages!!

Carina, Ant and Mylo - June 2017

We have had an absolutely blissful week at White Cottage whilst the weather wasn't great when we arrived, there's so much room that we never felt we were on top of each other. The dogs have never stopped wagging their tails all week. Mum's dogs love the HIK9 beds so much she's ordered one! I go on a lot of cottage breaks with Winnie and White Cottage is by far the best equipped for both us and the dogs. I can absolutely understand why this is booked up so far in advance and why people come back time and time again. White Cottage, it's been incredible.

Alli, Andy, Janicem Winnie, Cala and Dave - May 2017

Loved it such a special cottage and with a nearby beach! Meal at "The Star" and lunches were excellent as always. Great walks to the beach. Winterton beach now our favourite. Also had fresh crab from a local shop - delicious. Will be back when we can get a free week. Thanks.

Our second year at White Cottage, and loved it even more. Everything was perfect - I wish I could live here. A fantastically dog friendly cottage, where we could eat and natter with the dogs in the conservatory and the doors open. We had warm nights by the fire watching DVDs. The cooker was a revelation (used to gas hob) and the bed was comfortable. What more could we want?

Thank you for providing such a comfortable, well-thought out holiday home from home. Both humans and dogs have been able to relax and unwind (I don't want to go home). A few local highlights for us were the East Ruston Vicarage Gardens (no dogs), Truly Local on Stalham High Street (source of many of the delicious welcome pack goodies), 5 mile circular walk at Horsey windmill, local walk to Cart Gap via Happisburugh lighthouse (deserted at 6am), Kingfisher fish and chips Bacton (closes 7pm during week and 8pm weekend). A little further afield, Sheringham Park and Holt are very dog friendly (which also means there are lots of other dogs around). Both lovely though! I hope to return in the not too distant future.
