PUBS/PLACES TO EAT/SHOP
One of our favourite local pubs - great for food or just having a drink, sitting in by the fire or outside. Dog friendly of course! The Star Lessingham
Another good, dog friendly local pub - within walking distance of Red Roofs. Greyhound Inn, Hickling
Our local The Butchers Arm in East Ruston. Walking distance from the Garden Room, Piggery and Forge and just opposite some wonderful walking on the common. Dog friendly too. Very well priced lunchtime menu and regular events/theme nights.
This place definitely gets our vote - newly refurbished and opened in October 2011. Wonderful location and building, excellent food and a dog friendly bar. The Gunton Arms is in a deer park just outside North Walsham and is an extremely welcome addition to Norfolk's places to eat. Very worth a visit when you holiday here.
We very much like this pub too - old fashioned and cosy with great food, a good atmosphere and friendly staff. Of course it's dog friendly! Need you ask?! Vernon Arms, Southrepps
We quite liked it here too at the Poachers Pocket when we went the other day. Definitely dog friendly, cosy pub, friendly staff and the food looked good. Oh, ok then. We will go and check it out just for our guests! We're good like that.
Many more dog friendly pubs in the county can be found on the Dog friendly pub website.
After a walk on the beach at Salhouse or inland at Kelling Heath and maybe after a bit of a shop in Holt you really must head here if you like seafood! Cookies Crab Shop is a Norfolk institution. Not posh nosh but great plates of fab seafood. And it's a Bring Your Own place too so whether your tipple is Chablis or Guinness you can have what you want.
The Waterside at Rollesby is a great place to go to eat, for boating trips, nature watching, fun for children.
Eating Out In Norfolk - a whole website dedicated to finding good places to eat in Norfolk with a really good postcode based search function (you can find the postcode of each property towards the bottom of the individual property pages), a customer review section and lots and lots of ideas of places to eat!
Truly Local We love this shop in Stalham (the little shop with big ideals!) and increasing numbers of our guests do too. It sells only produce and goods from within a 35 mile radius of the shop (and much of it is way closer than that) Better still it is a not for profit social enterprise shop so the directors don't take any remuneration, shares or bonuses and all the proceeds go back into the local community. That's the very worthy bit! The other good bit is that the stuff they sell there is fab!!
Cooks Farm Shop at Sea Palling has a great selection of locally grown veg, bread, eggs etc and LOADS of pickles and jams. A great place to visit on your way back to any of the cottages from Sea Palling beach. Just a bit further down the same road is Causeway Butchers - another great local supplier for all sorts of fresh and cured meats and pies.
Up at Wells Next The Sea you will find our very favourite butcher, Arthur Howell. His Staithe Street shop is a proper, old fashioned, family run butcher and his family have also branched out into bakery too.
A fabulous emporium of dog accessories, toys, feed (including BARF diet, chews etc can be found at just this side of North Walsham at .......Kisi's Dog Accessories!
OTHER HOLIDAY PLACES WE CAN RECOMMEND
More dog friendly accommodation can be found here in the heart of Derbyshire. We have stayed at The Old Piggery and it is lovely! They also very kindly allowed us to copy the idea of their 'dog page'. They are very nice people and Tideswell is a great place, great for foodies. The Old Piggery, Tideswell
Keeping the Derbyshire link we also very much like Caudwells Mill Craft Centre which is in Bakewell (near Tideswell) and allows dogs into the cafe. In a seamless further link the owners of the craft centre also have two other dog friendly properties - Grace Cottages - to let in Dorset and Scotland. They aso own Milestone Barn at Gimmingham available via this website! They support Many Tears rescue by giving them 10% of the rental income. What lovely people!
Lots of other dog friendly properties all around the country can be found here...Dogs Invited.
If you can't get in to any of our properties we can also recommend Church Farm in the next door village. 5 bedrooms. Dog friendly.
RECOMMENDED WEBSITES/ORGANISATIONS
One of our regular and favourite guests brings her teaching dogs to stay twice a year but the rest of the time they are busy being teaching dogs at her Dog Communication workshops in Surrey. We have been with our dogs and learnt a lot! Dog Communication
And she takes great photos too, including many of them on this site! She specialises in dogs and family photos but can turn her hand to most subjects. See her work here.....Penel Malby Photography
We are fans of this local photographer too. He takes the most beautiful images from around the county. We are hoping to have his images on canvases in the big barn when complete. Stephen Mole Photography
We're on here too! Complete Norfolk
This lady has had the fab idea of making temporary collars for holidays - they last about 6 weeks and are waterproof. You use them in addition them to your dog's normal collar and you can put your holiday contact numbers on them. Wish I'd thought of that idea! Of course we have them in The Old Forge, The Old Piggery and Red Roofs. Sure they will be in the Garden Room soon. See them here. HolCols
We support these wonderful lurcher rehoming people. LurcherLink We have two dogs from them (Sonny and Tess) and sponsor some classes at their show at the East of England show in October.
Another regular guest is dog trainer Jane Williams - Athenae - based in Essex.
Everything you could possibly want to know about Sea Palling and the surrounding area is on the Sea Palling and Waxham Community website.
Whispering Reeds is the boatyard closest to Red Roofs - a great place to hire a boat for the day and/or learn to sail.
Some great information about Hickling Broad for those visiting Red Roofs.
And a lovely site all about the village of Hickling. And another about Hickling Broad and the other Norfolk Broads
We also appear on this site - useful if you want to find another dog friendly property. Pet Friendly Breaks.
