What a fabulous cottage! So comfortable and space for everything. Our 3 dogs loved the garden totally. The Star pub lived up to its reputation – amazing food (such a helpful chef) and lovely friendly staff. Proper traditional pub – no loud music and dogs welcome. Great walks from the cottage and well placed to go to the beach or explore the numerous villages locally. Thank you!
1 Chapel Cottage is tucked out of the way in the peaceful Norfolk village of Lessingham. Within a very short drive you have a great choice of dog friendly beaches, the closest being Cart Gap and Sea Palling. Great walks from the door and great food nearby too….read more below…!
Relaxing, dog friendly and comfortable – if that is what you are looking for, it’s right here!
The local beaches
The beach at Sea Palling is one of a small handful of Norfolk beaches to repeatedly get Blue Flag status, showing just how clean and safe it is! There is a fun little dog friendly bar here and a dog friendly cafe (open 364 days of the year and famous for its doughnuts and ice cream sundaes!) Fish and chip shop, shop/post office and a fresh fish stall too – Sea Palling has it all! Find out more about the village here.
Cart Gap has a great café, Smallsticks – one of our favourites! It’s a very short walk from the beach –
with great food on the menu and dogs very welcome in the enclosed yard area – practically perfect for a coffee and cake after a run on the beach!
The Norfolk Broads
The nearby town of Stalham means that you can easily get supplies for your stay at Chapel Cottage and from here there is access to the wonderful Norfolk broads. Boat hire is available at nearby Stalham Staithe and Wayford Bridge. Dogs are welcome on boats! It really is the best way to see the Broads. Beautiful Hickling Broad is a short drive away and there is boat hire here too. Nearby Potter Heigham is one of the Broads Centres – plenty of cruising opportunities and riverside dog friendly pubs to stop at too!
Local walks… and to the pub!
The cottage is at the start of an easy footpath where you can wander along through the farm land with your dogs and if you are in need of refreshments, the local pub, The Lessingham Star, is only 15 minutes’ walk away…..but maybe 25 minutes back depending on how good a time you have had!! Dogs are very welcome here and the food is great! The beer is well looked after, the welcome is warm and the pub is understandably one of the most popular locals in the area. If you want fine dining or to book for a special occasion, The Ingham Swan, is just down the road. Well worth a visit!
There are many walks you can do right from the door, all on quiet, livestock free land. If you want a full day walk you can easily walk to and along the coast as part of a circular walk. You are spoilt for choice here!
When you arrive
There is parking for two cars off road opposite the cottage.
Lobby: Walking through from the front door you enter a spacious lobby, great for wet/sandy dogs to dry off and for coats and boots, dog leads etc. Wood floor means it is easy to keep clean.
Bathroom: Off the lobby is the modern family bathroom with a full-size bath, rain shower and hand spray, toilet and hand basin, heated towel rail.
Living Room: Step in through a lovely timber door to the living room with its oak floors throughout, original fireplace with wood burning stove and a rug in front with stylish sofa and contemporary chairs. For entertainment there is a dvd player and tv with over two hundred channels on Freesat.
From the living room go through into the modern fitted kitchen.
Kitchen: Beautifully fitted kitchen with grey kitchen units and large enamelled sink. There is a built in oven and induction hob with touch controls and boost function, easy clean surfaces, extractor hood and funky blue light plus fridge/freezer, microwave, toaster, dishwasher and lovely wooden floors. Enjoy your meals at the table looking out over the garden and your dog is also provided for at meal times with a dog bowl and mat. Door opens out into the fully enclosed, dog friendly garden.
Back into the living room and up the steep, traditional Norfolk wooden stairs* to…
* Please note these are now carpeted and have plenty of hand rails
Double bedroom: Just off the landing into the front bedroom with modern wooden bed frame with memory foam mattress (so comfortable!), cotton bed linen and throws, bedside units and dressing table, with large mirror over, and contemporary hanging rail. Views to the front looking over farmland and horses.
Back into the landing and step down into the twin room, with two wooden bed frames and memory foam mattresses. Cotton bed linen and throws on both and both with bedside units, plus a tall unit with mirror and a contemporary pine hanging rail.
The Garden: The garden is very dog friendly with high solid fencing all round and a lovely vine covered gazebo to sit in. There is a garden hut which houses the washing machine and all cleaning items; vacuum cleaner, brushes, etc. Please note that there is also a pond in garden. It has a submerged pond grid system which is the same as the award winning Blue Peter garden and will hold a weight of 90kgs; the protective mesh stops the smallest of feet or paws getting through – see photos for evidence! The water is still accessible for those that want a little paddle.
How secure is the garden for your dogs?: This garden is highly secure with 6ft + solid fences on the left hand side (as you look out of kitchen door) and along the back, with the Methodist chapel next door providing the right hand boundary. There is a gate to the side of the cottage – again this is solid and 6ft+ high.
Chapel cottage is a non-smoking property and barbecues and other naked flames are not permitted.
This is an important insurance requirement.
In keeping with this old character cottage, the stairs are steep and some of the doorways are low.
Garden has a pond but this is fully protected with a submerged pond grid system so your dogs/children can’t get in!

We loved the quirky stairs – just like being on a boat! Thank you

We had such a lovely time here! Don’t want to go home! The dogs loved the garden. Very secure, even for our escape artist! Every morning we did a different walk from the door along the countryside tracks. Went to Sea Palling beach most days or Cart Gap and Waxham too! So many lovely cafes to eat at – everywhere is so very dog friendly! Loved the Star at Lessingham so much we booked there 3 times for lunch and dinner. We will be back!

Location & Directions
From A149 at Stalham take the turning onto Old Market Road, signposted towards Ingham, Lessingham and Sea Palling. Stay on this road out of Stalham town and when you get to the S bend (near Ingham Church and opposite the Ingham Swan – currently under reconstruction) take the first bend round to the left and then go straight on, rather than continue round to the right. At the next T junction, turn left and Chapel Cottages are a little way down here on your left (next to the Methodist chapel).
Some great comments starting from when we first started taking bookings in August 2018!

Lovely cosy cottage in an idyllic location. Very well equipped and very secure dog friendly garden. there are great circular walks from the cottage - we didn't see anyone for miles! (this included a stop at The Star!). Also did a great walk from Waxham to Horsey and another route from Winterton, which was fantastic, and finished at the Fishermans Return for lunch. This is the third East Ruston Cottage that we have stayed in and again, lived up to the reputation. Can also recommend Causeway Farm Butchers at Stalham for fantastic meat and there is also a farm shop near there for great fruit and veg. Thank you for all the treats on arrival! We hope to return to Norfolk very soon - Kirsty, Karen and Louis
Really surprised this cottage exceeded our expectations massively. Lovely comfortable cottage with everything we and the dogs needed. We certainly will be back and will be recommending to our friends. See you again soon. Steve, Lauren and dogs
