Very popular and beautiful barn conversion
“What a great place to stay! Thank you for sharing Rooster Barn, it has immediately become one of our favourite holidays. Such a beautiful and totally dog friendly place!”
Rooster Barn is one of our most popular Norfolk dog friendly properties. Not surprising as it is a stunning barn conversion at the end of a private drive in a quiet part of the already peaceful village of Trunch. The garden is big and fully enclosed and you can park within it – makes getting in and out of the car with dogs SO much easier!
- The conversion has been done to a very high standard and is mostly on the ground floor.
- There are pamment floors throughout, underfloor heating and a gorgeous double wood burner for winter warmth.
- The beaches are easily accessible and a short drive away. Lovely Mundesley is the closest.
- An ideal location from which to explore much of wonderful North Norfolk
- Already booked? Try Farthing Cottage and Swallowdale, both in the same village.
- Want a dog friendly village pub? The Crown Inn is a short stroll up the lane.
- Walcott Dog Park is a short drive away.
- If you like the look of our lovely Rooster Barn but have some more questions about our cottages generally, why not look at the FAQ page?
- Nearby independent Norfolk butchers, Tavern Tasty, is a great place to get all sorts of holiday food goodies.
For the dogs:
- Dog throws and bowls, towels and poo bags
- A large dog crate (with additional small, medium and large available on request).
- Dog sitting. If you would like to go out for a few hours and leave the dogs but are not confident they will settle, please see our website for recommendations.
- Electric car charging is NOT available at this property.
- Enough freezer space for raw food. The Raw Dog Food Company delivery to all ERC properties with a min order charge of £10.
- Fully secure garden with parking within it.
- Plenty of country walks from the door.
- Doggy treats and goodies in the welcome pack.
- If you use a buggy for your dogs, we can loan one for free if needed to save you packing yours.
For the humans:
- A VERY generous welcome hamper from Tavern Tasty including meats, cheese, cake, preserves, bread, milk.
- All bed linen and towels, bath, hand and tea towels + oven gloves
- Well ordered and current information on places to visit, walk, eat, shop etc.
- A selection of walking routes/books/maps.
- Cot and highchair available on request
- Free wifi (superfast broadband)
- First basket of wood for woodburner (honesty payment per basket for further supplies)
Sue and I met years ago when I was looking for a holiday property to buy in Norfolk. Turns out we live just a couple of miles down the road from where Sue grew up in Surrey and are the same age so doubtless our paths crossed long before ERC!
I’ve had all sorts of dogs during my life – Great Danes, Rottweilers and more – most recently standard poodles that have done very well at Crufts (retired now). We love coming up to Norfolk, spending time in Rooster Barn, visiting the local auctions/sales in the area to take some bits of Norfolk back down to Surrey with us and often go home with a car full of plants! I am a passionate gardener and grow a lot of my own veg too.

About the property
All about the inside:

Living area
Plenty of comfy seating in a very comfortable and relaxing area. Carved oak chest, occasional tables, lamps and plenty of decorative china and pictures and a flat screen tv/dvd player. Large oak framed patio doors lead to the gravelled garden and patio outside. Off this room is the…
Downstairs bathroom
Shower cubicle, toilet and sink. Fully tiled and plenty of room.
Ensuite Master bedroom
Double bed in a well appointed room with plenty of hanging and storage space and a well fitted ensuite bath room with a bath and over bath shower.
Paddle staircase
They are steep and not ideal for those with mobility problems but easy to get up and down when you know how and handrails to help. They lead to a lovely balcony outside the bedroom, overlooking the main living area.
Upstairs bedroom
This room is in the beamed eaves (low beams) with twin beds which can also be a superking double, bedside cabinets, easy chair and canvas wardrobe. Small window level with the floor opens up with a view down into the gravelled area at the back of the barn.
All about the outside:
Rooster Barn is at the end of a private gravel drive and accessed through the wooden 7 bar gate with extra mesh backing to stop small dogs escaping. Park and shut the gate and you can safely let the dogs out into the enclosed garden.
Double doors from the living room open out onto a lovely south facing patio and a gravelled area. It is separated from but connected to the parking and large grass paddock area. The whole of the property is gated and well fenced around the perimeter with a combination of post and rail fencing with stock mesh (smaller at the bottom to stop very small dogs squeezing through), solid fence panels and a mix of fencing plus planting. At the lowest point it is approx 4ft. but solid.
Rooster Barn grounds are mature and include an attractive but robust planting of shrubs and hedge plants. The main garden is laid to lawn with plenty of space for your dogs to exercise in a safe and secure space.
Will this property suit my dogs?
With the fully enclosed garden and parking and the large area of grass, this suits a lot of dogs! Escapees will be frustrated as the boundary is secure but obviously can be jumped in places where it is approx 4ft by determined jumpers, although they won’t be able to see what is on the other side. (It’s a field) Do please bear in mind that the detached property next door does have a dog but the joint fence line only includes the enclosed courtyard of the barn so the main garden does not have a shared boundary.
Flooring in the barn is textured stone tiles so is good for preventing dogs from slipping if they are older/arthritic.
If your dogs love a warm floor, cosy sofas and crashing out in front of a wood burner after a long day on the beach or the local woods, then Rooster Barn is definitely for them!
Please note:
- The most reliable network for the area is Vodafone.
- Arrival time 4pm – Departure time 10am.
- Electric car, bike or scooter charging cannot safely be done here and is NOT permitted at this property.
- Guests are asked NOT to smoke in Rooster Barn please
- If you wish for your dogs to sleep on the beds please can you bring your own bed linen or use throws and let us know so the cleaner knows which bed/beds to leave unmade.
- Crates. We would prefer that your dogs are not left alone in the property unless you are 100% confident that they will not get stressed. If they are crate trained and you would like to use a crate, please do ask us. We know how bulky they are to pack!
- All the main supermarkets deliver to Rooster Barn and deliveries between 11 and 2 can be put away before your arrival (please let us know)
Accessibility
Parking is outside on a gravelled parking area. There is a step into the property via double doors accessing the kitchen end of the barn. There are wider doors to access the lounge area, again with a step. Inside space is limited so not suitable for wheelchair users but for those with limited mobility or using a walking frame, there is suitable room. The downstairs bedroom is easy to access and whilst the ensuite bathroom has a shower over the bath, there is a separate shower room just off the lounge area. The property does not cater specifically for mobility, audibly or visually impaired guests but please do contact us if you would like to know more – hello@eastrustoncottages.co.uk.

“3rd year here and there’ll be a 4th. We love it: the barn, the area, the beaches, the pubs. Fish and chips twice from 3 Swallows at North Walsham. Rib of beef at the Gunton Arms. Walk at Winterton with fab meal at the Fisherman’s Return. Only one problem….going home!” – Kerry, Chris and Margaux with Buddy, Chester and Betty.
“We have had a lovely stay in the beautiful Rooster Barn which has everything needed for a great holiday. The board games came in handy midweek when the weather was a but wet! The rest of the time we have enjoyed the garden, re-visited favourite places (Happisburgh, Cart Gap, Sea Palling, Waxham and Felbrigg Hall) and enjoyed new ones too – Wells Next To Sea and Holkham. The welcome pack for us and the dogs was wonderful – thank you!” – Anne, John and Naomi
“We’ve had a great time here at Rooster Barn – a lovely, comfortable and clean barn with everything we’ve needed for us and our dog (black lab) Rio! This was our first time in North Norfolk and we’ve really enjoyed exploring the fab beaches and little villages. Everywhere has been so dog friendly and Rio has been fussed, welcomed and give treats throughout in many pubs, shops and even in the centre of Norwich! Some highlights for us were: Wells & Trimmingham (really tricky to find – try googling for Trimmingham to get some ‘rough directions’!) beaches, Wells Town, Holt & just generally everywhere! We ate at The Ship in Mundesley – Sunday roast dinner was very nice and huge portions! The Vernon Arms really lovely, great food (they don’t do food on Sunday’s so watch out) The Foundary Arms – nice but The Vernon Arms was our fave! Overall a fab fortnight and we’re sad to go home! Thank you so much for all the lovely treats on arrival – a lovely thought and much appreciated.” – Rio’s mum and dad
“Absolutely lovely barn, great area for visiting. We ate at the Vernon Arms – great food and dogs welcome but you need to book as very busy! In Cromer we visited the The Rocket (Lifeboat Museum) which had lovely food and great coffee, dogs welcome on the verandah which overlooks the sea and the pier. We have all had a super holiday – only wish we had booked for 2 weeks.” – Elaine, Robert and the 4 doodles – Treacle, Rosie, Amber and Honey
“We’ve had yet another lovely stay at Rooster Barn. A real home from home….Mark, me and our three pooches feel very comfortable here. We’ve been so lucky with the weather whilst we’ve been here with just a bit of rain at the beginning of the week. We’ve enjoyed lots of lovely walks on the beaches including Sea Palling, Mundesley, Bacton, Overstrand, Horsey and Waxham. Obviously no trip to Norfolk would be complete for us without a visit to see the seals and their pups on the beach – a sight which never fails to amaze us. Tried many, many of the pubs in the area and found them all to be very dog friendly – Our very favourite being The Gunton Arms – absolutely love it there. Really enjoyed our much needed week away.” – Katy and Mark, and Millie, Boycie and Lulu
“Wow! These two weeks just flew by! Been very lucky with the weather and only actually got wet once so can’t complain. We’ve been to Sheringham Park, Felbrigg Hall, Holkham Hall, Bacton Woods, West Runton, Beeston Regis Heath, Blickling estate (nice lake walk), coast path Weybourne to Sheringham is lovely, coast path at West Runton, beach at Trimingham (bit tricky to find), Cromer (great gluten free chips at No 1) and very bracing walk at Overstrand (nearly blown off our feet). We have 3 very tired dogs who loved the garden for chasing around. Gunton Arms for lunch, food was lovely, if you want to go for dinner, book early as we couldn’t get in because they were full.” – Jennie and Ian and lurchers Lexie and Rafftery and Whippet Kiira
“Well! Not sure what to say! We have had a magical week at Rooster Barn, Probably the best appointed cottage we have ever stayed in, right down to the seafood dining set we used to prepare our lobster from Overstrand. Cottage so so comfortable – loved it! Weather wasn’t on our side this week but we still managed some marvellous walks and visits. Holkham Bay to Wells is a favourite and it was sunny! Mundesley was a lovely new discovery and we had a lovely lunch at the Ship Inn in the garden overlooking the beach. Lovely walk from Overstrand to Northhrepps – past the ‘shrieking pits’ and a very impressive bull! Nice walk on a wet afternoon through Pigneys Wood – very pretty, and then ended today (last day) at Sheringham Park – really picturesque park and woodland – worth a visit. Had a light lunch with the dogs at the Gunton Arms, this is a favourite of ours. Thank you for the welcome pack – the dogs have loved the treats (as have we) and both of them are happily exhausted after a fantastic walk. Love, love, love, Norfolk – we will be back soon.” – Michelle, Diana Pip and Ollie
“Wonderful peaceful week at Rooster Barn – many thanks for letting us and the dogs stay in such a well-appointed cottage and for a great welcome pack. We tried to get to Trimingham beach but sadly, a cliff cottage has blocked access. Bacton beach is a great alternative for the dogs. Miles of sand and completely empty (avoid promenade area as not open to dogs in summer). Looking forward to next time.” – Annette and Neil, Sophie, Rose, Dylan and Ollie
“Our third stay at Rooster Barn with our 5 cocker spaniels! We have absolutely fallen in love with it here! The welcome pack is fabulous, the garden is so safe for all dogs and we love the log burner. We found some amazing beaches – Holkham was our favourite and definitely worth the drive! Winterton was another great find and the dogs loved exploring the dunes. Saw lots of seals at Horsey beach though the dogs were bemused that something else should be on their beach! Cant wait for our next visit.” – Cardine, Steve and the 5 worn out pooches, Ella, Tilly, Nora, Gus and Star
“We’ve had a fantastic time – thank you and we have already booked for next year. Couldn’t fault anything. Welcome pack was well received all round. Horsey beach – so close to the seals/fantastic beach. Gunton Arms – amazing rib of beef, Overstrand Crab Hut – fantastic flavour, Holkham – coast walk to Wells and crabbing, Bacton Wood – brill, Overstrand – Cromer beach walk, Happisburgh Hill House pub – quirky and good beer, Cromer – No 1 fish and chips, Cley – walk and smokehouse, Burnham Market – Haste Arms, Cromer – Poppyland Brewery, The Real Ale Shop – great beer selection, Truly Local shop – fab cheese, the boys (Schnauzers) loved everything – shattered and comfy.” – Kerry, Chris, Margo, Buddy and Chester
“We’ve had a lovely relaxing week staying at Rooster Barn, Trunch. Have had a really lazy week and have eaten out every day. Tried The Vernon Arms, Poachers Pocket, The Ship, The Nelsons Head, – all good but loved the Gunton Arms where you can have a really gamey meal surrounded by artwork from Tracy Emin and Damien Hirst. Its situated in a deer park too….loved it! Obviously a trip to Norfolk wouldn’t be complete without going to see the seals and their pups at Horsey beach and Waxham beach. Never fails to amaze us!! The beaches are truly amazing for walking the dogs, Sea Palling being our favourite. The dogs absolutely loved it. Just what the doctor and the vet ordered. Cant wait to come back again.” – Katie and Mark
“OMG! What a wonderful place. This must be the perfect holiday barn. It was fantastically well equipped, very comfortable and an amazing welcome pack. I think the dogs would give Rooster Barn a 10/10 also. Not only was the barn perfect, but was ideally situated for walks, beaches pubs etc. We want to thank you for sharing your beautiful barn with us and cannot wait to return. Have booked for next year already – can’t wait!” – Karen, Simon, Cushka and Freddie
“What a beautiful place. And as for the welcome pack, that was lovely. Abby (lurcher) said a very big thank you for her goodies, she loved the fish treats – we had to go and buy her some to take home! We couldnt fault one thing, so have rebooked for next year. Most of the pubs were dog friendly and Abby has made loads of doggy friends along the lovely beaches. My parents came down for a couple of days and they said it it the BEST holiday barn they have stayed it – and they have stayed in loads and loads. Well done Rooster Barn team! See you next year.” – Karen, John and Abby
