About Us

East Ruston Cottages came about because I regularly went on holiday with friends and up to 6 dogs and I knew just how impossible it could be to find a properly dog friendly holiday, somewhere that would allow us to bring all the dogs without...

  • paying a lot of money to clean a little bit of dog hair
  • offer decidedly 'doggy' accommodation with difficult rules and unsuitable outside areas

We spent ages looking for places that were properly dog friendly, that would allo us to bring all of us our dogs without making us feel like they were a nuisance!  And it was very difficult!

In 2006 I was lucky enough to be able to buy an empty barn next to my cottage so I set out to make something that I was always looking for when I wanted to go on holiday - a really nice, comfortable, easy place, genuinely welcoming to dogs. A home from home with NO charges for dogs and no limits on numbers, a properly secure outside space but nice inside.  Also no breed discrimination or restriction on ages - young or old.  So the Old Piggery was converted and I started taking bookings in April 2008.

I have lost and gained dogs in that time but this picture on the beach is with dear Tess (lost her in September 2019) and Sonny

I got bookings through agencies at first but they seemed to want an arm and a leg in commission, so I decided to set up a website and do it myself.  www.eastrustoncottages.co.uk came into being with a simple website made for me by my friend and run from an old PC in the corner of my living room (the website has undergone a couple of reincarnations and I work on a laptop now, but it's still pretty much the same!)

And it went rather well. The word spread and I got some great bookings.  The business has grown over the years, with people asking me to add their properties - nearly all friends or people I know, which definitely helps keep things friendly.  This part of Norfolk is just SO very dog friendly - the beaches, the countryside, the cafes and pubs - and I know it all really well as I walk my own dogs here all the time and eat in the cafes and pubs!

I am helped by Kerry and Karen who do the social media work and the accounts/admin respectively.  They do a great job from their homes here in Norfolk, in between looking after their children, dogs and other clients.  Kerry runs Yoga classes too!  But we all share a passion for Norfolk and giving our guests the best experience with their dogs here on holiday!

So ask me anything you want to know about your Norfolk dog friendly holiday and I will be able to help!  I love what I do and am passionate about offering properly dog friendly accommodation (rather than dog tolerant) that pleases owners as well as their dogs.

Dogs on beach

“Our first time at Hidden Gem but not East Ruston Cottages.   The cottage is absolutely wonderful and has a very homely feel.  We have had a really relaxing holiday in a stunning location and Hidden Gem is like a home from home.  The beach and dunes are beautiful and the garden has been perfect for our two hounds!  A very dog friendly holiday cottage. All the extra little touches and the welcome gifts have been much appreciated!  We will definitely be back!! "

“Thank you so much for allowing us to be your first guests in Corner Cottage. My first impression was "WOW!". The cottage is amazing, you have thought of everything (even supplied fantastic weather!). The decoration is lovely, beds so comfortable. It was so nice to be able to bring the dogs so they could have a holiday with us and experience the beach for the first time."
